In Transit features a contemporary score by the creators of Frozen and Pitch Perfect. The story follows eleven New Yorkers as they navigate the chaos of city life, love, and career — all while waiting for the subway.

What to Prepare
Show us what you've got. Here's everything you need to know before your audition.
Vocal Audition
Prepare a 16-to-32-bar selection from a contemporary musical theatre piece or modern pop/rock/R&B song.
- Must be performed a cappella
- Do NOT sing from the show
- Pitch pipes or starting notes will be provided
- Choose something that showcases your vocal control and range
Beatboxers & Vocal Percussionists
If you have beatboxing or vocal percussion skills, prepare a 30-to-60-second demonstration showcasing your abilities.
- Show range of rhythmic styles
- Demonstrate versatility and control
- This is in addition to your vocal audition
Reading Component
There will be a cold reading component at auditions.
- Sides will be provided at the audition
- No advance preparation needed
- Focus on character choices and emotional range
Movement Component
Be prepared to move. Choreography will be taught at the audition.
- Wear comfortable clothing you can move in
- Bring appropriate footwear for movement
- No prior dance experience required, but be ready to learn

What to Prepare
Vocal Selection
Prepare 60–90 seconds of a contemporary musical theatre or contemporary pop/rock song.
- A cappella preferred, or with simple accompaniment
- Do NOT perform a selection from In Transit
- Demonstrate strong pitch, rhythm, and vocal control
- Focus on storytelling and emotional connection
- Choose material that highlights your strengths
Monologue
Prepare one 30–60 second contemporary monologue.
- Demonstrate authenticity and emotional connection
- Show character development and storytelling ability
- Memorization is strongly encouraged
Dance
Dance is not required for your initial video submission.
- Movement will be evaluated during callbacks if needed
Your Slate
Before beginning your audition, record a brief introduction:

- The title of your song

Recording Guidelines
Camera
- Record in landscape (horizontal) orientation
- Position the camera at eye level
- Frame yourself from the knees or waist up
- Keep the camera stationary
Lighting
- Ensure your face is well lit
- Avoid standing in front of bright windows
- Use natural or soft lighting whenever possible
Audio
- Record in a quiet location
- Reduce background noise and distractions
- Make sure your voice is easy to hear
- If using accompaniment, keep your voice as the focus
Background & Format
- Choose a simple, uncluttered background
- Avoid filters, special effects, or excessive editing
- Submit one continuous video or separate labeled files

Character Breakdown
A driven, ambitious young woman navigating a crossroads in her career and identity. Ali is the emotional center of the show — grounded, funny, and deeply relatable. She must carry both comedic and tender moments with equal ease.
Also portrays: Ensemble vocalist; supports harmonic foundation throughout
Ali's best friend — warm, witty, and fiercely loyal. Sophia provides comic relief and emotional support. She is a natural storyteller with a bright, expressive voice and a gift for physical comedy.

A seasoned New Yorker with a sharp wit and a guarded heart. Jane has seen it all and isn't easily impressed — but beneath her tough exterior is someone longing for connection. Requires strong acting chops and a rich, full-bodied voice.

Boxman is the rhythmic engine of In Transit — the human drum machine who drives the entire show. This is not a supporting role. Boxman is on stage throughout, providing the beat, the pulse, and the sonic foundation for every number. This role demands exceptional beatboxing and vocal percussion skills, extraordinary stamina, and the ability to sustain complex rhythmic patterns while remaining fully present as a performer.
Seeking: Performers with advanced beatboxing ability, a wide rhythmic vocabulary, and the physical endurance to sustain high-energy percussion for a full two-act musical. Vocal singing ability is a plus but not required.
Ensemble Expectations — All Roles
Every principal cast member also serves as a full ensemble vocalist. All performers must be able to hold an independent harmony part while others sing different lines, maintain pitch without instrumental support, and contribute to the full a cappella soundscape of the show.
Strong sight-reading ability and prior a cappella or choral experience are a significant advantage.
